Hello –

This week’s CDC Salt e-Update includes potential warning labels on high sodium restaurant foods and Nestlé sodium reductions.

NYC Seeks Warning Labels on High Sodium Restaurant Foods
Recently, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYCDOH) proposed an amendment that would require chain restaurants to post a warning label on menus and menu boards indicating items with a sodium content higher than the total daily recommended limit (2,300 mg). According to the NYCDOH, approximately 10% of menu items sold in NYC chain food service establishments covered by the proposal have at least 2,300 mg of sodium and would require the warning label.

Written comments on the proposed amendment to “Article 81 - Food Preparation and Food Service Establishments” may be submitted to resolutioncomments@health.nyc.gov or at NYC Rules until close of business on July 29, 2015. Verbal comments may be provided during a public hearing on July 29th, 2015; participants can pre-register by contacting Svetlana Burdeynik at 347-396-6078.

Nestlé Continues Sodium Reductions Across Portfolio
Nestlé USA recently announced plans to reduce sodium by 10% in the company’s most-popular frozen pizza and snack products by the end of 2015. The reductions, based on sales weighted averages, will affect more than 250 products across six brands in the United States, including DiGiorno®, Tombstone®, California Pizza Kitchen®, Jack’s®, Hot Pockets® and Lean Pockets®, and also new products within these lines to be launched this spring. In 2013, Nestlé pledged further reductions in salt in products such as soups, noodles, recipe mixes, frozen and chilled meals, and pizzas, affecting the Maggi, Stouffer’s, DiGiorno, and Buitoni brands, among others.
